Data kept on your device

Wordknots saves puzzle progress, found words, elapsed time, theme and tutorial choices, install preferences, notification history, local challenge session and sync information, and a per-day marker that prevents a completed day from being counted twice in analytics. This lets the game resume and remember your choices.

This information is stored in your browser using local storage. If local storage is unavailable, Wordknots may use first-party cookies as a durability fallback. These cookies are not advertising or analytics cookies. Clearing Wordknots site data in your browser removes these local records and preferences.

Cookie-free usage analytics

When usage analytics is enabled, Wordknots uses the hosted Hobby edition of Umami Cloud, with its analytics dataset assigned to the United States region. Analytics records are retained for up to six months.

When enabled, Wordknots sends only deliberate, normalized events: broad page type; starting, leaving, restarting, or completing a level; completing the day; tutorial outcome; choosing an archive date; successful sharing method; active seconds; level number; whether the day is today or archived; whether play was resumed; and counts of required and extra words found.

Analytics never includes the words you find, puzzle letters or paths, exact puzzle dates, query strings, invite or share tokens, names, challenge or notification identifiers, puzzle fingerprints, or saved game records. Wordknots does not use Umami identity features or session replay.

Umami does not set analytics cookies or place an analytics identifier in your browser. It uses an IP address and browser information transiently to produce an anonymous visitor hash that changes monthly and to derive basic technical statistics such as browser, device type, and approximate location. Wordknots overrides the tracker referrer with an empty value, and the raw IP address is not stored by Umami.

If your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, Wordknots sends no analytics events. Analytics is used only to understand aggregate use and improve the game; it is not used for advertising or sold.

Your anonymous play identity

When you open Wordknots, the game creates an anonymous identity for your device on its own service, hosted on Cloudflare. Reading this privacy page does not create one. The identity is an opaque random identifier that we generate; it is not your name, email, IP address, or an advertising identifier, and it is never shared with Umami or any other outside service.

The identity is held in a first-party cookie that lasts 180 days and is renewed each time you return, so a device that stops visiting eventually expires on its own. It lets Wordknots record your own games, carry your progress into challenges and races if you choose to use them, and understand how many people come back on later days — including people who look at the game without playing it. Without it we cannot tell a returning visitor from a new one, because mobile networks change addresses constantly.

What is recorded against it are the same sanitized result facts described below: timing, extra-word credit and counts, completion time, and puzzle and ruleset identifiers. Never the words you find, the board letters, the paths you trace, or definitions.

If your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, Wordknots creates no play identity and records no games to the service. Clearing Wordknots site data removes the cookie, and your next game starts a new unlinked identity that cannot be connected to the old one. Clearing site data does not delete records already sent, and Wordknots does not yet offer a way to request deletion of those records or publish a retention schedule for them.

Challenges and shared results

Challenges are optional. When you create or join one, Wordknots sends the display name you choose, room membership, and sanitized result facts against the identity described above. Result facts include timing, extra-word credit and counts, completion time, and puzzle and ruleset identifiers; they do not include the actual words, board letters, paths, or definitions.

Your puzzle words, boards, paths, and solo results are not visible to friends. While a one-to-one friendship remains active, each friend can see the other person’s coarse “Last seen” time. It reflects the latest authenticated Wordknots activity across active linked devices; it does not mean that person is online, identify what they did, or reveal a puzzle result. Challenge rooms show results only to people who joined that room.

Invite links can let a recipient join a room, and shared-result links can show the frozen result described on the sharing screen. Treat these links as information you are choosing to give their recipients. Clearing browser data removes your local challenge credentials but does not delete challenge data already submitted to the service. A fixed challenge-data retention and deletion schedule has not yet been published.

Notifications

Wordknots provides in-app notices and, only after you grant browser permission, optional operating-system push for friend turns, results, game expiry, and manual nudges. Push subscriptions contain the browser endpoint and encryption keys needed for delivery and are attached to your anonymous Wordknots device identity; they are not sent to Umami.

Notification read, seen, presented, dismissed, and cached-message state is stored on your device. You can disable game alerts from Settings or browser settings. The current system does not collect notification-open or notification-delivery analytics.

Hosting and service providers

Cloudflare delivers Wordknots and hosts its optional notification and challenge services. Like any web host, Cloudflare receives request information such as your IP address and browser details to deliver and protect the service. Umami Cloud provides the anonymous analytics described above. Wordknots has no advertising network and does not sell personal information.

Changes to this notice

If the data Wordknots collects or the services it uses materially change, this page and its last-updated date will change with them.
